AIM Applauds Gov. Sanders for Her Commitment To Maternal Health Policies
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (February 21, 2024) — Today, at a maternal health roundtable hosted by Sen. John Boozman (R-AR), Rep. French Hill (R-AR-2), and the University of Arkansas for Medical Services (UAMS), Gov. Sanders addressed maternal health disparities across Arkansas and demonstrated her commitment to enhanced maternal health policies.
Arkansas has the highest maternal mortality rate in the nation, according to the Arkansas Center for Health Improvement. Arkansas also has the third-highest infant mortality rate, behind only Louisiana and Mississippi.
“We thank Gov. Sanders for joining today’s important conversation around the critical state of maternal health in Arkansas,” said Ashley Bearden Campbell, executive director of AIM. “We are heartened to hear the Governor and her administration are working on a new comprehensive statewide maternal health plan.”
Bearden Campbell went on to say, “We want policymakers to know they have robust support to tackle these issues in a meaningful way, and it is encouraging to see this important action being taken. With some of the highest maternal and infant mortality rates in the country, Arkansas policymakers have no time to spare.”
“This is an important step in the right direction to ensure a brighter future for our state and all its residents. We are grateful to UAMS, Senator Boozman and Congressman Hill for hosting this critical conversation, and we encourage advocates and lawmakers across the state to continue amplifying this issue.”
