Recognizing Maternal Mental Health Month and Mother’s Day, AIM Champions Increasing Support for Emotional Well-Being of Mothers

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (May 1, 2024) — This May, Arkansans for Improving Maternal Health (AIM) is recognizing Maternal Mental Health Month and celebrating all moms this Mother’s Day. May is a time to honor all of the inspiring mothers in our lives and to shine a light on the importance of ensuring they have access to the best possible care and support throughout the early days of motherhood.

Maternal Mental Health Month serves as an opportunity to highlight the critical role mental health plays in the journey of motherhood. According to a 2021 report from the Journal of Women’s Health, suicide is the leading cause of postpartum mortality, accounting for 20% of postpartum deaths nationwide. Regular screening and follow-up postpartum care are critical. Healthy, happy mothers are the cornerstone of healthy, thriving families. AIM believes supporting the mental health of mothers is integral to comprehensive prenatal and postnatal healthcare.

As Mother’s Day approaches, we honor and celebrate the love, strength, and dedication of all the remarkable mothers in our lives.

“Addressing mental health is a crucial component of maternal healthcare,” said AIM Executive Director, Ashley Bearden Campbell. “It is vital that we take a holistic approach to supporting the physical and emotional well-being of moms before, during, and after pregnancy to pave a positive pathway into motherhood and to set families up for success."

Throughout the month of May, AIM will raise awareness and empower moms to make their voices heard so we can work together to improve maternal health for all Arkansans.

AIM’s Ashley Bearden Campbell will join the Northwest Arkansas Health Summit later today to moderate a panel titled Our Stories, Our Strengths: Unifying Voices to Improve Maternal Health. AIM will also join Senator Missy Irvin and Representative Mary Bentley at the Arkansas State Capitol on Thursday, May 2 for the Month of May (MOM) event, which advocates for healthy lifestyle choices and prioritizing maternal health.
