LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (July 24, 2024)—Today, State Representative Mary Bentley joined Arkansans for Improving Maternal Health (AIM) in celebrating International Self-Care Day and recognizing the critical role self-care plays in maternal health.
“Maternal health is a cornerstone of a healthy society. Adequate self-care for mothers is an investment in the future of our communities. I am excited to see the energy across our state coming together in our maternal task force to get real help for Women in Arkansas. We can do better to take care of our mothers so that their families and our communities can continue to thrive,” said Representative Mary Bentley.
Ashley Bearden Campbell, executive director of AIM, stated, “Self-care is a necessity, not a luxury, especially for new mothers. Women’s physical, emotional and mental health relies heavily on self-care and directly impacts the health of their babies.”
A strong network that supports mental health, good nutrition, physical activity, timely medical care and other tools is necessary for well-rounded self-care for mothers. For those in our underserved communities in Arkansas, access to these resources can often be limited.
“AIM is committed to working alongside Arkansas’s state legislators to address these disparities,” Bearden Campbell continued. “We advocate for comprehensive access to healthcare, education and community support systems.”
